Delage Styling and Design
La Belle Voiture Française
Richard S. Adatto and Diana E. Meredith have written a long awaited book in English about Delage, the sultry, Art Deco French car that was a favorite of the rich and famous during the inter-war years. It introduces this fabulous marque to car enthusiasts, describing the beginnings of the company headed by Louis Delâge, and touching upon its early racing history when driver Robert Benoist won the trophies that made the car famous around the world. Subsequent chapters describe the styling and design of the stunning cars built on the Delage D8 chassis during the golden age of European Continental travel. The D8 allowed the premier coachbuilders in France to dress it in elegant and original creations. Letourneur & Marchand, Figoni & Falaschi, Pourtout, Paulin, Chapron, Labourdette, De Villars, Van Vooren, Freestone & Webb, Henri Binder, Gallé, Fernandez et Darrin and Saoutchik created some of their finest work on this chassis, producing what today have become rolling sculptures. These were the cars that dominated the concours d’élégance in the 1930s and allowed Louis Delâge to rub elbows with the beau monde. Examples are described and photographed, with images taken at the time of their construction and present day photographs of beautifully restored cars. Many photographs and documents have never been published before. The book includes an appendix with 15 pages of technical information and tune up specifications.
